What happened to My snacks?
IHPCH has become a victim of inflation. It’s infiltrating our territory, leaving marks everywhere it goes, forcing us into tighter budgets, and making us spend too much money. This is especially true for the most popular place in IHPCH: the school store.
The snack fortress is the one place students actively look forward to, arriving early during lunch to purchase yummy chips, fresh baked chocolatey gooey cookies, or cold chilled Snapple. The hallways fill with students as some eagerly or anxiously wait their turn in line. But recently, all has changed and the store rush isn’t as intense as it once was. School staff lament that, “After the price increase, the attendance of students has been fluctuating.”
According to International Monetary Fund, inflation…”is the rate of increase in prices over a given period of time.” Over the last years, prices have increased by 50 cent compared to last year due to the cost of production. Mrs. Chrishelle Thorpe, the school store’s adviser explained that prices are increasing for students because the costs have increased for the school.
Having to adapt to this sudden change and cough out two more quarters is not in every student’s budget. Sukanna Sarker ’23 stated, “I don’t even bother trying to buy things because they are expensive and I would go buy things outside.”
This situation can be a lesson on how to save money. Mrs. Thorpe stated, “It is very good to create a budget to look at the cost of an item and calculate the profit margin so you don’t overprice yourself.” In other words, don’t spend more than what you have, or really want to spend. This is a life lesson for everyone.
In the end, inflation, like climate change and COVID-19, has become another part of the world that we must adapt to.
