This week’s Potato head was given to Ms. Goods, one of our very own ELA teachers here at IHPCH (as well as the IHPCH Voices founder). She was very happy and surprised to receive the potato head, and we hope her joy can be perfectly portrayed through her interview below. Enjoy!
IHPCH Voices: Who did you receive Potato Head from?
Ms. Goods: Mr.Turnage.
IHPCH Voices: Why did Mr. Turnage give you Potato Head?
Ms. Goods: This 9th grade class has been a little unexpected. It’s been a bit of a struggle this year and, so, Mr. Turnage knows that I’ve been having a very difficult time with one particular section of students. He was just acknowledging that he knows that everything is going to end up okay as it always does; that I just have to persevere through. And so he was letting me know that I could do it.
IHPCH Voices: What was your initial reaction to receiving Potato Head?
Ms. Goods: I laughed, because number one it was unexpected. I didn’t feel like I have done anything up until this point to be acknowledged or recognized, so I wasn’t expecting potato head and also because of what he put on it. It made me laugh.
IHPCH Voices: What did he add to the potato head and how does it represent you?
Ms. Goods: So Mr. Turnage added Wonder Woman on Potato Head. She has an afro, which I love the afro; like it’s so adorable, and how does it represent me? Well, our 9th graders are always a challenge because they are just getting acclimated to high school. But I also have individuals coming to me and saying like, (I know Mr. Armstrong has said it…both of them have said it, Ms. Tyrell has said it, Ms. Stock has said it)…by the time the students move through the grades, they are completely different people most of the time, and so that really gives credit to the 9th grade teachers as to all of the hard work that they put in. So that just represents how hard I work in order to make a change in our students.
IHPCH Voices: Thank you for your time.
Congratulations to Ms.Goods! Thank you for helping the students feel more welcomed.
