The basic skills needed in playing volleyball are passing, setting, serving, spiking, blocking and digging. From August 28th to August 30th, a plethora of girls from different schools in Campus Magnet arrived to tryouts. These girls hoped to showcase not only skills, but also what they would offer as a teammate, a player, and a lover of volleyball. However, in the end, only 17 strong, talented female athletes were chosen to be on Campus Magnet’s Girls’ Varsity Volleyball team for Fall 2023 season.
I can confidently say that Coach Neil Griffenberg and the team have been putting in 110% in both practices and games. The newest members are consistently making a mark for themselves and overall the team’s great performance and collaboration is something you shouldn’t miss out on.
Before every game, the team puts their hands together in a circle and yells “1,2,3 BULLDOGS” as a way to cheer themselves on and reassure each other that they’ve got this. Nevertheless, on September 19th the volleyball team had it’s first home game against Far Rockaway Educational Campus and won with the score 2-0. The immense support from the bleachers did assist in the team’s first win of the season, to the extent where the cheers were so loud that you could hear it from down the hallways.
However, two days later, the team lost to Springfield Gardens 2-0. Although a few of the players felt defeated, they know this game won’t define them; they embrace their losses as a lesson. They strive to work on their weaknesses as a team because winning is only a matter of communication, perseverance and teamwork!
Let’s wish them luck on their last game, and hope they make it to the playoffs!
